702: Structure Fires

702 Structure Firefighting

702.1 Structure Fire Classifications

Residential Fires

Residential fires are fires on structures that are used to house people. Typically responded to by a lightforce and an RA.

Commercial Fires

Commercial fires are fires on structures used for commerce, business, or commercial storage/shipping. Typically responded to by a task force and an RA dependent on the size of the structure.

Greater Alarm Structure Fire

A Greater Alarm Structure Fire is a fire that takes up a large building and requires more than one station to respond.

Major Emergency Structure Fire

A Major Emergency Structure Fire is a fire that takes up a large building and requires USAR to respond.

702.2 Tasks

Lightforce

The truck will begin ventilation and head to the roof with the appropriate tools.

The 200 series engine will begin a supply line to the engine through a hydrant.

Engine

The engine will be on fire attack, starting an attack line and supply line if applicable.

Rescue Ambulance

The RA will be on standby as medical or as a Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC).

Incident Command

The incident commander is responsible for managing and controlling the fire scene. They shall give the appropriate instructions to the arriving apparatus, direct arriving apparatus where to park if necessary, and communicate to and from Metro/County. Typically, the incident commander will have the command post on the Alpha side of the fire.

NOTE: A Collapse Zone is the area around the building where no apparatus shall be parked. Typically, the collapse zone is calculated by the height of the building plus one story.

For example, a two story building would have a collapse zone fit for a three story building.

702.3 Operations

Lightforce

The truck will begin ventilation and shutting off the utilities to the building. This can be done by going to the roof and cutting vent holes or smashing windows.

The 200 series will start a supply line to the engine and then begin an interior search of the building

Engine

The engine will begin fire attack on the exterior of the building. The engine crew can move to the interior when instructed to by the IC.

Rescue Ambulance

The RA will be on standby as medical or as a Rapid Intervention Crew (RIC).

Incident Command

The incident commander will be instructing each apparatus what to do on the fire scene once their primary duties are fulfilled. This can include reassigning the 200 series to fire attack with the engine crew or sending a crew to protect exposures. The IC will also conduct a 360 check of the building (a complete walk around to look for additional exposure, flames, or smoke).
