1101: Captain
1101 Captains
Captains are the first rank in the department's supervisor structure.
All Captains are responsible for generally supervising patrol activities and running various special operations within the department.
1101.1 - Captain I
A Captain I is responsible for scene management that does not require significant resources. At any time, a Battalion Chief may overtake Incident Command if the circumstances are absolutely necessary.
Note: Agency pronunciation may vary.
Responsibilities include:
Company Officer of Apparatus.
Commanding smaller groups (Individual apparatus).
Active when there is sufficient personnel online (Three not including the Officer)
Responding the station complement and directing their activities at emergencies.
When first on is responsible for all phases of command until properly relieved.
Assigning all station personnel to the companies within the station in accordance with Department policy.
Maintaining the station and assigned equipment and apparatus.
Planning, scheduling, and directing station fire prevention, pre-fire planning, and community relations.
Training and informing personnel within the command to assure effective operations; and requiring compliance with Department orders, directives and policies.
Maintaining records and forwarding necessary reports.
1101.2 - Captain II
Captain II is an in-character rank only, and can be staffed by a Captain who is past their probationary period.
Note: Captain II is typically an Administration role, and less of a front-line role- however they're not restricted in attending calls.
Responsibilities include:
Commanding a Task Force Station
Responding the station complement and directing their activities at emergencies When first on the scene, is responsible for all phases of command until properly relieved. If not first on the scene, taking command or assuming command from officers of lower rank until properly relieved.
Active when there is sufficient personnel online (Three not including the Officer)
Assigning all station personnel to the companies within the station in accordance with department policy
Maintenance of the station and assigned equipment and apparatus
Planning, scheduling and directing station fire prevention, pre-fire planning and community relations
Training and informing personnel within the command to assure effective operations, and requiring compliance with department orders, directives, and policies
Maintaining records and forwarding necessary reports
1101.3 - EMS Captains
EMS Captains are paramedic-trained members that hold advanced EMS knowledge and can provide the highest service of care within their scope of practice.
Note: Certain agencies do not use the title of EMS Captain.
Operate PIC or passenger seat of paramedic fire apparatus and act as an Apparatus Officer in the absence of a Captain I. (Paramedic Equipped vehicles only)
Management of EMS Operations and procedures. May also function as a Nurse Practitioner in the LSFD if the circumstances are necessary.
Must have at least two RAs of any kind in service before being able to operate as an EMS Captain.
May operate as a Paramedic Supervisor in the Private EMS section.
Staff capabilities:
Issue warnings.
Update department personnel conduct portfolio.
