105.1 SWORN RANKS
Firefighter I – Fire Recruits attending the Fire Academy
Firefighter II – Firefighters in their Probationary Period
Firefighter III – Firefighters that have completed their Probationary Period. Certified EMTs
Firefighter III/PM – Firefighters with active Paramedic Certifications
Engineer – Drives the apparatus. In character rank only, has no departmental meaning.
Paramedic-in-Charge – Rides shotgun on Rescue Squads and Rescue Ambulances, does most of the medical care on scene, handles radio communications. In character rank only, has no departmental meaning.
Apparatus Operator – Tillerman, operates the tiller trailer. In character rank only, has no departmental meaning.
Captain – In charge of an engine, light force, EMS division or special operation. Supervisor rank.
Battalion Chief - Manages a handful of stations and is usually IC on large scenes.
Assistant Chief – Manages an area of the city, helps to coordinate massive scenes.
Deputy Chief – Assists the chief in running operations, oversees the Battalion and Assistant Chiefs
Chief – Runs the department, is the face of the department.
105.2 NON-SWORN RANKS
Fire Explorer - Teenagers and Young Adults interested in a career in the Fire Service. May ride-along with firefighters if a Captain or Higher is on duty.
CERT Volunteer - Civilian volunteers with some training, responsible for fulfilling duties under the Community Emergency Response Team.
Department Mechanic - Civilian employees working under the Supply & Maintenance Division. Not permitted to operate department emergency equipment (eg lights, sirens) on public roadways. Permitted to wear T-shirts, class Cs/Bs with no badges.
Fire Policy Assistant - Civilian Employees working under the Research & Development Section to create department policy and training materials
Fire Administrator - Civilian employees working under the Administrative Services Bureau. Assists in paperwork and background department operations.
Fire Commissioner - Civilian member of the Board of Fire Commissioners. Consists of 5 separate members who are responsible for fulfilling the role of the Fire Chief when one is not available. They retain all the powers of an Assistant Chief and collectively work as the Fire Chief.
